Here are some facts about famous festivals and holidays in different countries.
The Irish celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th of March. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. On this day, people wear green clothes. They also pin a shamrock on their clothes. Big parades take place in every city or town all over the world. There are marching bands and street parades there. People play national music, sing, dance and have a lot of fun.
The British celebrate Guy Fawkes’ Day on the 5th of November. He was the man who wanted to blow up (взорвать) the Houses of Parliament in London, but he was caught. On this day, people light bonfires in their gardens. They make a figure of Guy Fawkes and burn it on their bonfires. Children go out into the streets with a figure of a guy, get some money and buy fireworks. People have parties in the evenings.
In India people have the festival of colours called Holi. They celebrate it every spring. They throw coloured powder at each other, sing and dance and have a parade of painted elephants. It is really exciting!
In Russia people celebrate Maslenitsa at the end of February or at the beginning of March. They say goodbye to winter. This holiday lasts for a week. Russian people cook and eat pancakes (блины), have parties with their families and friends.
So, different countries have different festivals and celebrations and people do their best to keep them up.
